EMT school

I think my favorite part of EMT school is when we are doing simulations and who ever is being the patient just really acts it up good.

We have to be our own model patients with guidance from the intructor. Some of my classmates are great actors, some just freeze when the situation goes sideways and normally I learn something no matter what.

It's fun. I am enjoying learning about pre hospital care, as basic a level as it is for EMTs. The negative is how much time it takes up for me in a week. It is very hard for me to put jiu jitsu and bike riding and whatever else at a lower priority.

ugh

the problem with getting a great idea before bed was two fold for me last night. one, i didn't sleep well at all and i needed to be up at 5am since i am building my mountain bike race course all day out near temecula. secondly i forgot my duty this week to go and lock up the church.

when my brain takes over and runs with something there is noooooooo room for anything else. sorry.

(i dont know what to say)

ugh, let's just get the cutesy crap outta the way...

$35 gasoline, $90 race entry, 5 hours driving, 20 minute race. Getting last place in my class, worthless.

"race on sunday, sell on monday" for me is "race on saturday, loose on saturday".

ok, so i did my first super d race with the rim nordic promoters. NOT a super d course that favors my strengths and totally was all about my weaknesses.

if you can't tell i placed 5th outta 5 in my class today. how did this happen? well there was 1.5 miles of sustained, continual climbing right from the start. nothing technical or scary at all. your wheels never leave the ground...... it was basically just a section of their xc course. totally a super d race for the weight weenie lycra crowd. whatever.... i mean, what kind of "d" race has you ride up the road to the top?? no shuttle? come on........ super d to me means downhill lite. super do to this organization mean "short xc". so with no jumps, no rocks, nothing remotely steep i still managed to fall once! HA! me, falling. (shaking my head)

the class i was in, "open" was inhabited by people getting paid to race, people with over 10 years racing experience and so on. yeah, i was totally not prepared for this kind of racing.

so, what came good of today? i was up in the mountains, people were nice, the course was well signed, the results posted quickly and the medals are attractive.(even for 5th)

having my weaknesses laid bare under the microscope of competition is not comfortable. my reaction to that feeling though is to train a little differently for how this series runs super d. oh, and i will be riding my hardtail, not my freeride bike!

this course also really makes me appreciate the courses at www.racersandchasers.com and the events i race with them. also, since i helped build and design the latest super d course it is much more to my liking.

(im not gonna post pics of me getting 5th place. no way. i have too much ego.)

fry day

check my free tshirt. this is what you get when you give a good Yelp review.

also, i was out with R. from the racers and chasers mountain bike seriesi (www.racersandchasers.com) helping to make a super d course at a new location.

what does that really mean? 7 hours of swinging a pick ax in the 90 degree riverside county sun.

i actually did smile most of the day.

my rig.

how you haul an ax around on a motorcycle. strap it down and sit on it.

what i had to cut through all day.

this is what happens when you wear shorts and work on making trail all day. at least i never sun burned with this additional help from nature's sunscreen, dirt.

tomorrow is my first race up at rim nordic in their super d series. M. helped me prep my bike tonight so i have no mechanical excuses for a poor showing. the course is supposedly pretty tame and very xc like. meh, i'll give it a shot. i like competing anyways.

(i hope people like the course i'm making for R.'s race series... it's very technical. some pedaling. soft sandy dirt. off camber corners. a few jumps. a big boulder to ride over. i think it will be great!)

Where were you when you heard Kurt Cobain died?

I was in the bike shop, working on a bike with the radio on when the news came over. I was struck dumb and just stood there silently and still for like 30 seconds.

I lived in the Pacific Northwest and I loved grunge. He was an impact on my generation, a total sea change in how we saw music and rock. But that was it. Music and Fashion. He didn't give me a value system to base my life on.

And then Michael had to go and upstage Farah. Always trying to be in the spotlight. Yes Thriller was another seminal album that impacted a generation. But this is how I will remember him.........
"What do Michael Jackson and K-Mart have in common?"
"They both have boys pants half off."

The guy was just an entertainer with what turned into an extremely flawed adult life. He doesn't deserve my reverence anymore than Kurt took 30 seconds of my time.

Real people doing real things under tough circumstances are the real heroes, the people who really should be mourned when they suddenly pass.

Where were you when M.J. died? Who cares.

if there is no video, it didn't happen

This one is for you PJ

Laughter is the best medicine. Even for bike crash wounds.

Happy Fathers Day

Thank you for your example and raising me!

Thank you for making "me" possible. And writing back.

Thanks for letting me do what I can.

Thanks for your love. And acceptance.

When I was a kid i never remembered my parent's birthdays. I do now. But I sadly admit that I did not do a post on my sister's birthday. I did call her and get her a gift, so I don't really feel too guilty.

What reminded me? The card I got today from my parents for my birthday a month after my own. Hahaha, I love them! I am just happy anyone remembers. A card could arrive in November and I would be happy.

So five days late, "happy birthday T.!"

Bo knows............

If you remember the 80's you will remember Bo Jackson, a professional football and baseball player who had all these commercials with the tag line, "Bo knows" whatever because he was a two sport athlete.

Well here I am, in Bo's shoes. It looks like in the same year I was 2nd in the Pan-American Championships for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I could be in the top 3 overall racing Super D in two different mountain bike racing series. Whoa.**

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter and mountain bike racer. That's like being a super model and an astronaut. A race car driver and a big game hunter. Dr. Quest and Steve Martin.

Or just Rowdy.

**Every organized sport/competition I have been in:
tee ball one year
basketball elementary school
wrestling 8th grade
tennis 8,9,10,11 and half of 12th grade
mountain bike racing
autocross
bouldering and speed climbing contests
brazilian jiu jitsu and submission grappling
cross country running races
shooting, both guns and archery

I would El Oh Vee E to have something like this near here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need this. Greatly!

weekday update

tue-hanging out with the neighbors. fun fun. well, at least that is all i can remember from that day. i did go to EMT school but that was hardly anything worth remembering.

wed-once again up to my new fav place for mountain biking. took two other people up there as well and we all had fun. A. is getting used to this kind of riding and though he felt over his head a bit he never quit. or really crashed for that matter. (amazing for him. almost as amazing as watching him eat 3 double doubles!)

thur-emt school. grocery shopping. register for the next race. oh yeah and speaking of that, checking the website i was actually 3rd in my class!!! someone was in our class who shouldn't have been. so i moved up a spot!

fri-sell the old bike rack. maybe massage on my messed up neck/shoulder/back/chest area. buy books about 4x4 trails in san diego. go to beach? and emt homework of course....

sat-i have a freaking saturday class!! ugh. not happy about that. i had plans to go wheeling out at Corral Canyon OHV and now i'm basically doing nothing on sat other than struggling to stay awake.......

If one is the lonliest number... OR race report for the Super D at Vail Lake, Temecula CA

Then what is 4? Fourth place that is, because that is what I finished in my class racing today.

The great:
-MY NEW TRUCK worked perfectly. It helped just making my pit area nice.
-I received lots of good comments on my custom helmet.
-The actual course was fun and fast. My two pre-runs really helped me get up to speed. Of which I now have a new measurement for what "fast" is on a mountain bike. Practicing with a couple pro's just showed me how fast one can really go.
-I hit all the jumps just fine.
-I helped someone who wrecked badly with my new EMT training. That was really cool to assess a trauma patient in real life. The race organizer gave me a certificate for a free bike tune-up for helping the guy.
-Everyone was really nice.

The so-so:
-I did just fine, but I am not entirely happy with a mass start for a downhill race.
-My preregistration was not found, causing a slight headache at the first part of my day.
-I got a little too much sun on my neck and forehead.
-I wish these trails were closer than a 45 minute (no traffic) drive to my house.
-No t-shirt for the race.
-The leather number plates are very unique, but I wanted like a "real" one since I supposedly was in a "real" race. And mine had one of the numbers on backwards.
-Course signage could have been improved, this would be crucial later.

The bad:
-I came in 4th place in my class. Why should I be mad?? I mean, the other guys are great guys and all but I beat myself. At the bottom of a steep chute I bobbled and was confused for a second about the direction of the course, so much so I almost came to a complete stop. My lead was blown!!! I totally worked my race plan, I lead at the start, the hike a bike and from practice I was better at the jumps than the other beginners. But my hesitation killed it. I was running a very strong second place and these two guys caught me and passed me there. Poof! They had momentum and I had none. Dang it!!!! It was embarrasing to have to stand on the grass next to the podium in 4th place when I had 2nd locked up so strongly, it seemed. Live and learn. To the two guys that passed me, I'll see you at the next race and believe me it won't happen again. =)
-I didn't give very good directions for filming and photos so I just don't have any to post that really capture what it was like to be in the race.
-Due to the heat and being behind schedule we lost one practice run. I think one more run would have totally solidified the course in my mind. Oh well, race and learn.

cooler than a polar bear's toenails

My Giro Remedy full face mountain bike helmet got some custom attention from a local artist. I put an ad on Craigslist looking for a graffiti artist to do some work on my helmet before this weekends race. I received about 5 serious emails from professional artists to hobbyists. When I asked for samples one artist totally nailed it and that is who I decided to commission. (see two posts below)

He did exactly what I had envisioned and with time to spare! Totally an artist I would recommend for any other kind of graphic work you might want, for anything.
