Maggots used in wound debridement are consider a medical device, not a drug. The same is true for leeches used medicinally. Who knew?

Also you are never supposed to reuse maggots or leeches and used leeches should be incinerated. Who knew?

  3. I've put leeches on two different patients, actually. Both were people who had finger reattachments. The leeches secrete a blood thinner in their saliva that keeps the capillaries from clotting off, making it easier for the reattachment site to heal. AND I've been to the Medical Leech Museum in Charleston, SC. It was a block from my house.
